Letter from the President
September 29, 2005.
Dear friend,
The Millennium Fund has launched an appeal for donations to support its tutoring program for students displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
In the wake of these emergencies, those of us who have been spared the storms' worst ravages have risen to meet the many urgent and compelling human needs of evacuees.
As a result of the devastation caused to homes, schools and whole communities in New Orleans, the East Baton Rouge Parish School system has had to accommodate an additional 4,500 students at very short notice. More are being added daily.
In addition to our principal programs assisting disadvantaged children in Barbados, we also have a proud record of five years service tutoring in the Baton Rouge public schools.
The Millennium Fund therefore moved immediately to place a special focus on displaced New Orleans kids. We mobilized our student organization, the Millennium Volunteers of Louisiana State University (MVLSU).
So far we have signed up some one hundred and thirty student volunteers who will be distributed among six schools situated within a four-mile radius of the University.
Our time and services are totally free of charge and volunteer-provided. However, our most critical need is to raise funds to rent modest office space and to offer nominal stipends to two administrative and coordinating staff.
Prior to the hurricanes, two local entities had given us reasonable assurance that they would allow us pro bono office accommodation within their buildings.
After the hurricanes, hundreds of New Orleans businesses relocated to Baton Rouge. Real estate values soared. The University, churches and nonprofits have all shared what limited space they had.
Now office space is at a premium.
We make this appeal, then, for your assistance in our efforts to serve these very valued children. Donors to the many causes similar to our own have organized potlucks, barbecues, dinners, teas, lemonade stands, and a variety of other fundraising events and entertainments.
We urge you to give what you can and give generously.
You can make a donation online via our secure server, or by check payable to The Millennium Fund and mailed to:
